How is NDIS Transport Funding Paid?
Getting around can be one of the biggest challenges for people with disabilities. The NDIS recognises this and provides transport funding to help participants access their community, work, and essential services. By understanding how this funding works and how it’s paid, you can make the most of your NDIS plan.
Many individuals are unsure about the eligibility criteria and application process to get this support. The good news is that NDIS transport funding operates through a straightforward system that puts control in your hands. In this blog, let’s explore how it all works and what to expect.

What is NDIS Transport Funding?
NDIS transport funding provides financial support for participants who can’t use public transport safely or independently. It helps cover everyday travel costs related to work, study, medical appointments, or community activities. This support is usually included under Core Supports in your NDIS plan. That gives you flexibility in choosing the transport options that best suit your lifestyle and support needs. During your planning meeting, your NDIS planner will assess your situation to determine the level of funding. The amount you receive depends on your individual travel needs and personal circumstances.
What Does NDIS Transport Funding Cover?
NDIS transport funding can cover several types of travel-related supports, provided they are reasonable and necessary. These may include:
- Private Travel Services: This includes costs for taxis, rideshares, or community transport when using public options isn’t safe or practical.
- Vehicle Modifications: If you own a vehicle and need modifications like hand controls or wheelchair access, this may be funded separately under Assistive Technology.
Specialised Driver Training: You may also access lessons or support to help you travel more independently in the future.
Assistance of Support Worker for Transport: If you need a support worker to travel with you, or if they drive you to appointments or activities, this cost can be included in your plan.
It’s important to note that NDIS transport funding does not cover:
Everyday Transport by Family or Carers: This funding does not cover travel costs for carers or family members to transport you for everyday commitments.
Public Transport Infrastructure: The NDIS does not fund the development or maintenance of the public transport system.
Travel Fare Concessions: Discounts or rebates for using standard travel services are managed separately by state transport authorities, not the NDIS.
Who is Eligible for NDIS Transport Funding?
NDIS transport services support participants who find it hard to use public vehicles independently. This funding is designed to help you get to work, school, training, or community activities when you cannot use buses, trains, or trams on your own.
You may be eligible if:
- You’re unable to use public transport safely or without assistance
- You need to travel regularly for work, education, training, or community activities.
You do not have access to informal transport support from family or friends for your everyday commitments
What else does the NDIS consider?
- Whether you’re already receiving travel support from other sources, like a taxi subsidy scheme
- If the transport is for essential purposes, rather than daily personal errands
Your overall situation and needs, which are reviewed in detail during your NDIS planning meeting.
During the planning meeting, the participant’s transport requirements are assessed to determine the appropriate level of funding.
How Much Funding Can You Get?
The amount of NDIS transport funding you can receive depends on your individual needs and how often you need to travel. The NDIS has three main levels of transport support:
Level 1: Up to $1,784 per year
This level is for participants who are not currently working, studying, or attending day programs. It supports those aiming to build confidence and increase their involvement in the community.
Level 2: Up to $2,676 per year
This funding suits participants involved in part-time work or study, and those who regularly attend day programs, social events, or recreational activities.
Level 3: Up to $3,456 per year
This one supports participants who are working, actively seeking employment, or studying at least 15 hours per week and cannot safely use public transport.
Your eligibility for each level will be assessed during your NDIS planning meeting based on your needs, goals, and travel requirements.
